ஆண் தகை ஆண்டு அவ் வானோர் துறக்க நாடு அருகில் கண்டான்; ‘ஈண்டு, இது தான்கொல் வேலை இலங்கை?’ என்று ஐயம் எய்தா, வேண்டு அரு விண்ணாடு என்னும் மெய்ம்மை கண்டு உள்ளம் மீட்டான் ‘காண் தகு கொள்கை உம்பர் இல்’ என, கருத்துள் கொண்டான்.

Meaning

Hanuman is momentarily overwhelmed by the magnificence of Ravana's Lanka. Its opulence rivals heaven itself, causing him to hesitate briefly. Yet his devotion and clarity quickly restore his focus — she who is worthy of being sought would never be in a place of pleasure like heaven while separated from her Lord. That realization immediately redirects Hanuman's search.

Theological

In the Vishishtadvaita reading, Lanka's heaven-like splendour is samsara in its most seductive form — gilded, dazzling, but not the true destination. Hanuman, crossing the ocean to reach the jivatma, embodies the Acharya: the guru who mediates between the soul and the Lord. His momentary doubt on seeing Lanka's magnificence mirrors the soul's own confusion when confronted with worldly opulence that can, from the outside, resemble liberation.

But Hanuman's decisive insight cuts through that confusion. The jivatma — காண் தகு கொள்கை, "she who is worthy of being sought" — would never rest in heavenly comfort while separated from the Paramatma. This is the Vishishtadvaita conviction at its core: the jivatma's nature is to be inseparable from the Lord (aprthaksiddhi). Any pleasure sought apart from Him, even in heaven, is incompatible with that nature. The tamilvu edition's உட்குறிப்பு confirms this: the good guru (நற்குரவன்) crosses the ocean of samsara toward the pure soul for the sake of liberation.

A further layer opens when Sita is read as an avatara of Mahalakshmi. In Vishishtadvaita, Sri holds the unique role of Purushkara (புருஷகாரம்) — the divine mediator who intercedes on behalf of the bound jivatma before the Lord, making His grace accessible. Sita's captivity in Lanka makes this vivid: the Purushkara herself appears separated from the Lord, mirroring the condition of souls entangled in samsara. Hanuman's certainty that she cannot be resting at ease reflects the understanding that Sri's compassion for bound souls is unceasing. Finding her is therefore not only Rama's mission — it is the precondition for liberation itself. The mediating grace of Sri must be restored before the jivatma can return to the Lord.

Literary: The ocean is both the literal barrier to Lanka and a figure for samsara.
